Gordon Father-Son Combination Land 462-1 Treble at Haydock
Trainer Chris Gordon and jockey son Freddie enjoyed a fairytale afternoon at Haydock Park on Saturday, landing a spectacular 462-1 treble on Betfair Chase Day that marked a career milestone for the 20-year-old rider.
The day's drama unfolded across three races, beginning with Diamond Hunter's 12-1 upset in the Grade Two Betfair Supports Safer Gambling Week Newton Novices' Hurdle, where the six-year-old beat the persistent Masked Man by one and three-quarter lengths, with even-money favourite Sticktotheplan disappointing back in third. The winner, sourced from Irish trainer John Costello's point-to-point string, proved his class despite his inexperience at this level.
David's Well then defied a lengthy absence in the Bet At Your Best With Betfair Handicap Chase, with Gordon senior revealing the soft conditions proved crucial for a horse who had overcome a minor setback since his previous victory. The 11-4 chance scored smartly over the two-mile trip.
The treble was completed in style when Electric Mason held off the late thrust of bottom-weight Hartington and champion jockey Sean Bowen by a neck in the Betfair Stayers' Handicap Hurdle. The 17-2 shot's gutsy performance drew particular praise from connections, with one enthusiastic owner already eyeing the Stayers' Hurdle at Cheltenham - a suggestion Gordon diplomatically deflected.
The significance of the day extended beyond the impressive accumulator odds. The three victories meant Freddie Gordon had ridden out his claim and would join the fully-fledged ranks, having dispatched his final winners in a single afternoon at a major Saturday fixture.
"It's a real red-letter day," said Chris Gordon. "Freddie didn't want to know horses for a big part of his life and didn't really start until he was 13 or 14 but has taken to it really well".
The Gordons were denied a four-timer when their Andashan was blown away by Kabral Du Mathan, winning by 12 lengths as the 6-5 favourite, in the Betfair Racing Podcasts Handicap Hurdle. But nothing could dim the lustre of an afternoon that Chris Gordon described as his best ever, with future targets including potential chasing campaigns for Diamond Hunter next season.
