Precise Stamps Classic Authority with Imperious Fillies' Mile Display

Precise underlined her credentials as a leading Classic prospect with a commanding three-and-a-quarter-length triumph in Friday's bet365 Fillies' Mile at Newmarket, delivering Aidan O'Brien his seventh success in the Group 1 contest.

The Moyglare Stud Stakes heroine traveled like the 5-4 favourite she was under Christophe Soumillon, showing tactical maturity beyond her experience. Settled off the pace, she tracked her Ballydoyle stablemates Composing and Sugar Island from a less favorable draw before uncoiling a devastating turn of foot. Once hitting the front in the final furlong, the Starspangledbanner filly pressed clear with authority, dismissing Charlie Johnston's 40-1 outsider Venetian Lace into second.

O'Brien was effusive in his praise, drawing comparisons to Ballydoyle's 2016 champion. "She looks very special and everything she has done from day one has been so easy, so we were never sure how good she was," he said. "She looks serious and it reminded me of Minding, she was impressive, incredible really".

The master of Ballydoyle was particularly impressed by how Precise "sailed down to the two-furlong pole" and had effectively sealed victory by the one-furlong marker. Soumillon praised his mount's professionalism, though he was forced to hit the front earlier than ideal.

Precise will now be put away for the season and trained specifically for next year's Classics, with O'Brien declaring "the sky is the limit for her". The performance continued an extraordinary autumn for the Ballydoyle juveniles, with O'Brien noting parallels between Precise and Diamond Necklace, his Prix Marcel Boussac winner at ParisLongchamp.

For Johnston, there was no disgrace in defeat. Venetian Lace, who had raced prominently throughout, confirmed her Group 1 credentials despite being friendless in the market. "I'm delighted with ours," Johnston said. "She belongs in these races".

The Middleham trainer is already looking ahead to Epsom, suggesting the Oaks remains the primary target, though a return to the Rowley Mile for the 1000 Guineas in May is also under consideration.
