Champion Jockey Bowen Galvanizes "Bone Idle" Strong Leader to Grade Two Glory
WETHERBY — Champion jockey Sean Bowen produced a masterclass in horsemanship to galvanize the notoriously reluctant Strong Leader to victory in the Bet365 Hurdle at Wetherby on Saturday, getting up a stride before the line to snatch victory by a neck.
Conceding weight to all of his rivals, Olly Murphy's eight-year-old captured his second Grade Two triumph, adding to his Liverpool Hurdle success earlier in 2024. But victory looked anything but assured for much of the race as the favorite struggled to find his best form.
Victory looked unlikely as Bowen pushed and prodded his mount while his brother James set out to make all the running on Doddiethegreat, before Harry Skelton pounced on Take No Chances. The mare appeared certain to collect the prize, but Strong Leader, sent off at 15-8, finished powerfully in the closing stages to prevail.
Murphy was refreshingly honest about his training methods in the aftermath. "I don't think I've done a good job of training him since he came back in from his break," the trainer admitted. "We did a few things a bit differently, I've minded him a bit and haven't been as hard on him as usual and you do need to be quite hard on him because he's bone idle".
The victory showcased Bowen's supreme riding skills, with the champion jockey needing every ounce of his experience to extract maximum effort from a horse who needs constant encouragement. Strong Leader requires a flat track to be seen at his best, and Wetherby's galloping configuration proved ideal for his running style.
The Grade Two West Yorkshire Hurdle, as the race is also known, provided the eight-year-old with his first competitive appearance since finishing second to Hiddenvally Lake when defending his Liverpool Hurdle crown at Aintree in April. Despite the five-month absence, Strong Leader showed he had lost none of his ability when allowed to race on his favored ground conditions.
The performance demonstrated once again that with the right handling and circumstances, Strong Leader remains a force at the highest level of hurdling. However, Murphy's candid assessment suggests the gelding will continue to test the patience of his connections as they navigate his quirky temperament throughout the season.
For Bowen, it was another example of why he sits atop the jockeys' championship, turning what looked like certain defeat into victory through sheer willpower and expert race-riding.
