Royal Ascot's Two Year Old Highlights

For many of us, one of the best parts of the annual excitement of Royal Ascot is seeing the early summer's best two year olds battle it out. This year was no different, with more than one of the winners looking to have the potential to become a future superstar.

Queen Mary Stakes (Group 2, 5f Fillies)
Winner: True Love
Trainer: Aidan O’Brien | Jockey: Ryan Moore

Aidan O’Brien secured his first-ever win in the Queen Mary with True Love, a daughter of No Nay Never, who stormed home under Ryan Moore. Breaking smartly, she tracked the leaders before being unleashed with 1½ furlongs to go, accelerating impressively to win by nearly a length. Her professionalism and rapid turn of foot marked her as a potential top-level sprinter. Plans may include the Lowther Stakes or even a tilt at the Prix Morny in France. Her victory signaled the strength of Ballydoyle's fillies this season.

Windsor Castle Stakes (Listed, 5f)
Winner: Havana Hurricane
Trainer: Eve Johnson Houghton

Jockey: Charles Bishop

In a packed field of 25, Havana Hurricane shot out of the gates and was never headed. The colt showed blistering early pace and admirable determination to repel several challengers late on. This win was particularly meaningful for Eve Johnson Houghton, continuing a strong 2025 season and delivering a first Royal Ascot juvenile winner. Havana Hurricane has options in top-level sprint races later this summer, and his gate speed and tractability make him a dangerous opponent on any surface.

Norfolk Stakes (Group 2, 5f)
Winner: Charles Darwin
Trainer: Aidan O’Brien | Jockey: Ryan Moore

Charles Darwin lived up to significant expectations with a fluent win in the Norfolk, giving O’Brien his second juvenile winner of the week. Always travelling smoothly under Moore, he quickened decisively with 200 yards to run and held off the late charge of Arabian Dusk. This son of No Nay Never remains unbeaten in two starts and is shaping up as a candidate for the Prix Morny, or even the Nunthorpe Stakes against older horses. A serious talent.

Coventry Stakes (Group 2, 6f)
Winner: Gstaad
Trainer: Aidan O’Brien | Jockey: Ryan Moore

Opening the juvenile action on Day 1, Gstaad delivered a performance full of substance and steel in the Coventry. The Mehmas colt had to dig deep in the final furlong as the field closed around him, but Moore timed the run perfectly, holding on by a neck. His toughness and balance were evident, especially on ground that had softened after early showers. Gstaad may now target the Phoenix Stakes at the Curragh or even the National Stakes over 7f later in the season.

Albany Stakes (Group 3, 6f Fillies)
Winner: Venetian Sun
Trainer: Karl Burke | Jockey: Clifford Lee

A clear standout on Day 4, Venetian Sun charged through late to win the Albany Stakes by over a length. She travelled sweetly throughout and produced an eye-catching finishing kick down the middle of the track. Trainer Karl Burke called her "the best juvenile filly I've trained"—high praise considering his recent roll of talented 2-year-olds. A daughter of Lope de Vega, she is likely to progress toward the Moyglare Stud Stakes or even the Cheveley Park Stakes depending on how she continues to mature.

Chesham Stakes (Listed, 7f)
Winner: Humidity
Trainer: Andrew Balding | Jockey: James Doyle

Humidity delivered one of the most determined performances of the week to win the Chesham on Day 5. The ground had softened by Saturday, and his ability to handle conditions, coupled with his stamina at 7f, proved decisive. A full brother to 2022 winner Holloway Boy, Humidity came from mid-pack and outbattled the well-fancied Portland to win by a short head. This was Andrew Balding’s first juvenile winner of the meeting, and the colt looks tailor-made for a step up in trip—perhaps a tilt at the Royal Lodge or even the Futurity Trophy.
